AJINOMOTO TAKES ACTION ON ASPARTAME DESCRIPTION
International Food Ingredients
12/06/2008
Ajinomoto Sweeteners Europe has issued legal proceedings for defamation against ASDA Stores Limited, for describing aspartame as a “nasty” on a wide range of own-label products.
Ajinomoto says that it has tried to negotiate an agreement with ASDA but has been unsuccessful, and has taken the step to defend the reputation of aspartame and those products that are sweetened with it.
In May last year, ASDA announced that it would be the first supermarket in Britain to commit to the removal of all artificial colours and flavours from all of its own label food and soft drinks products, offering a “no nasties” guarantee. In addition, it also announced that it would replace aspartame in low calorie products with sucralose.
