 | | NATIONAL STARCH FOOD INNOVATION CLAIMS REGULATORY ADVANTAGE | | | National Starch Food Innovation | | 19/05/2008 | | | In response to the changing international legislative landscape, National Starch Food Innovation has expanded the function of its European regulatory compliance manager. Julie Scott will now manage regulatory affairs for the company’s global nutrition business. This will ensure that all new nutrition and health legislative developments are co-ordinated and communicated comprehensively and quickly to National Starch Food Innovation’s customers around the world.
Scott holds dual qualifications in the disciplines of science and law. She also has experience in the chemical and polymer industry, and has spent ten years handling regulatory affairs for National Starch Food Innovation, European region. The submission of the company’s health claims for incorporation to the European Community List has been high on Scott’s agenda. Submitted under article 13 , this application supports National Starch Food Innovation’s functional ingredient, Hi-maize™ resistant starch.
Under the new legislation, any food product claiming to have a health or nutritional benefit must, by 2010, meet a list of European Commission approved wording and be supported by science. The process to pass these new laws provides National Starch Food Innovation with the opportunity to further substantiate Hi-maize. In addition, company’s submission will allow food manufacturers the potential to communicate the benefits associated with this fibre-rich ingredient using simple, permissible health claims that can be used on food labels throughout Europe.
With the highest dietary fibre content of all commercially available natural resistant starch ingredients, Hi-maize enables manufacturers to increase fibre in everyday foods. Scientifically substantiated to offer multiple nutritionally important benefits when eaten as part of a healthy lifestyle, this ingredient helps the body from within by letting it work as nature intended. Offering an easy way to eat more fibre, Hi-maize strengthens the body’s digestive defences by promoting a healthy digestive system and delivering prebiotic activities and can help to control blood sugar ‘highs’ by improving glycemic response.
According to Scott, the new legislation levels the playing field for claims within the food industry: “Every claim will now have to be corroborated by the necessary science. Once the European Commission publishes its final list of permitted health claims in 2010, consumers throughout Europe can rest assured that rigorous scientific assessments back up what is written on food labels.” | |
