 | | GOOD NATURED FRUIT WINS SUPREME SCOTLAND FOOD & DRINK EXCELLENCE AWARD | | | Angus Soft Fruits | | 12/05/2008 | | | Good Natured Fruit (GNF), a range of strawberries and raspberries grown by innovative Scottish growers Angus Soft Fruits without the use of pesticides, last night (8th May) won both the ‘Supreme Award’ and the ‘Retail - Fruit or Vegetable Category Award’ at the 2008 Scotland Food & Drink Awards in Edinburgh.
First Minister Alex Salmond presented the two awards to Angus Soft Fruits at a gala dinner attended by 300 guests from the food and drink industry. The 2008 Excellence Awards are widely acknowledged as the “Oscars” of the industry honouring all that is best in the food and drink sector in Scotland across a total of 16 award categories.
Angus Soft Fruits developed the GNF Fruit method of growing soft fruits in response to growing consumer and retailer concerns over pesticide residues on fruit. The GNF approach uses a combination of traditional farming practices and new technology to offer a pesticide free option to all consumers at affordable prices. Angus Soft Fruits oversee all stages of the growing process from plant selection, through harvesting to final product quality control and the products brand identity aims to set it apart from supermarket private label produce.
The Angus Soft Fruits Research & Development team went back to basics to gain a detailed understanding of how a plant grows and interacts with its natural environment replacing the need for pesticides in the growing process. Instead of spraying whole fields with blanket pesticide applications, which are harmful to the environment, GNF carefully monitors pest and disease levels in the crop. Natural predators such as ladybirds are used to control pests like greenfly, and plants are kept healthy with a balanced nutritional diet.
John Gray, Commercial Director of Angus Soft Fruits who received the awards comments: “Angus Soft Fruits is delighted that our Good Natured Fruit brand has won both the ‘Retail – Fruit or Vegetable Award’ and the ‘Supreme Award’ as the Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards. The Awards showcase and celebrate the very best of Scottish food and drink and provide real credibility and prestige for the GNF brand so we are delighted with the accolades.”
