The food and drink sector skills council, Improve, has strengthened its team with the appointment of three new recruits.

The development team, which is responsible for devising employer-led products such as new qualifications, has welcomed two new skills development advisors. Tanya Lowe has just completed a degree in Language, Human Communication and Education Studies, and will work mainly in promoting careers in the sector. She will support activity around the Schools Food and Drink Challenge, and will work on careers professional development, employability and life skills.

Cristin Grenier, who hails from Rhode Island in the USA, has also recently left university after completing a postgraduate degree in Language Learning and Education. In her new role, Cristin will focus on the development of new standards and qualifications reform.

Jack Matthews, Improve’s chief executive said: “The growth of the development team reflects the increased amount of work being undertaken to expand careers and training opportunities in food and drink. This year has seen the launch of the first new-style S/NVQs and new VLQs, which have been developed to better fit the needs of industry. We also continue to raise awareness about the career opportunities in food and drink, among potential new recruits and existing sector employees.”

Improve has welcomed a third new recruit, with the appointment of Graham Else as operations manager for the West Midlands. In this role, Graham will work to identify the skills needs of food and drink manufacturers based in the region, and will represent their needs to key agencies such as the regional development agencies, skills partnerships, and learning and skills councils. He will also help to enhance relations between employers, and training and educational organisations.

Graham joins Improve from utility contractor Morgan Est Ltd, where he was national training and development manager. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the training sector, working for a mix of private companies, public bodies and educational institutions.
