Kenwood Vineyards initiated the Artist Series in 1975 with a simple idea: handcraft the finest possible Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon and bottle each vintage with a unique label showcasing a work of fine art. From the first release, the Artist Series captured the public's imagination and quickly became one of California's most coveted and collected wines. Artists featured in the Artist Series include such famous names as Joan Miro, Sam Francis, Alexander Calder, Wayne Thiebaud, Pablo Picasso and David Lance Goines.
In the excellent and underrated 2003 vintage, Kenwood winemaker Pat Henderson selected the finest lots of Cabernet Sauvignon from hillside vineyards overlooking the Sonoma Valley. Harvested in early October and fermented separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the individual vineyard lots then were racked into primarily small French oak barrels to age for 29 months. After the best of these lots were assembled, a small percentage of Petit Verdot was incorporated into the final blend to enhance the power of hillside Cabernet Sauvignon with additional fruit and spice nuances. After bottling, the 2003 Artist Series was aged an additional 18 months at the winery before release.
The 2003 Kenwood Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits intense aromas of black currant, raspberry and blueberry, complemented by mint and bittersweet chocolate notes. Concentrated raspberry, blueberry and black cherry flavors show layered complexity against a subtle spice background. Impressive weight, structure and balance combine with integrated tannins to give this youthful Cabernet Sauvignon opulence on the palate that stays focused through the long finish. Approachable now, this Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon should continue to evolve in the cellar for several years.
The 2003 Artist Series label features "The Starry Night," the most famous painting by legendary artist Vincent van Gogh. Born in Groot-Zundert, Holland in 1853, van Gogh was a post-Impressionist whose work powerfully influenced modern Expressionism, Fauvism and early abstraction. His unique fusion of form and content is particularly powerful and imaginative in his later works. Painted in June of 1889 during his stay at the asylum at Saint-Remy, in the south of France, this tour de force uses swirling brushstrokes and saturated color to communicate heartfelt drama and emotion. It was created just 13 months before the artist's death in 1890.
Like previous Artist Series vintages, the 2003 Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon is sure to become a cellar treasure. Only 2,350 cases were produced. It is available nationally in selected markets at a suggested retail of $70 per bottle.
The Artist Series is one of four Kenwood Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignons. The winery also makes Jack London Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from grapes grown on the famous author's Beauty Ranch, Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon from prime local vineyards, and Yulupa Cabernet Sauvignon, produced exclusively for restaurants.
Kenwood Vineyards was founded in 1970. Situated in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, Kenwood Vineyards is dedicated to producing premium wines that showcase Sonoma County vineyard character at its best.
