- Bombilla & Gourd(R) Launches Mate Tea(TM) Yerba Mate Deliciously Re-Invented While Providing 'Calm Energy' -

Bombilla & Gourd(R) (pronounced bom-bee-ya & gord), a brand new player in the organic beverage industry makes its market debut with the launch of Mate Tea(TM) (mah-tay), a USDA-organic ready-to-drink cold beverage made from yerba mate, a popular tea consumed almost religiously in areas of South America. Traditionally, the leaves of this subtropical evergreen are brewed in a gourd and passed between friends, who drink it through a metal straw or "bombilla" as part of their daily interaction. The young, innovative Bombilla & Gourd(R) team introduces this culturally rich and healthy tradition into the lifestyle of the American public with a modern twist -- a smooth, refined taste, not always associated with mate, specifically served chilled. Mate Tea(TM) will be available at Whole Foods Markets nationwide beginning mid-October in five fusions: Blueberry, Pomegranate, Peach, Lemon and Mint & Honey.

Defining a new category of beverage, Mate Tea(TM) is brewed directly from the tea leaf in the same location where it is bottled, unlike most commercial iced teas which begin as a powdered concentrate. It contains about one fifth of the caffeine of coffee, offering a "calm energy" as opposed to typical caffeinated drinks that can cause jitters and an energy crash. Calm energy in mate is derived from a natural balance of theobromine, theophylline and caffeine in the mate leaves, which provides a sustained but relaxed boost.

"We were taken by the power of the culture surrounding yerba mate in Argentina and much of South America," said Thomas Wollmann, Co-Founder of Bombilla & Gourd(R). "As we further understood mate's health benefits, particularly in comparison to other bottled organic beverages available in the United States, we were determined to share this with and turn as many people on to it as possible."

Mate provides its drinkers with a healthy source of vitamins, minerals and energy. It contains 196 active chemical compounds including 11 polyphenols -- essentially 90% more antioxidants than green tea. (Polyphenols are a powerful class of antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, protecting the body's cells, and are believed to be associated with reduced risk of cancer and heart disease). Additionally, unlike typical mate brands that dry their leaves over fires, resulting in a heavily smoked flavor, the Bombilla & Gourd(R) Mate Tea(TM) is dried using only hot air, giving it a uniquely fresh, clean flavor. Traditional regional brewing methods of adding honey, citrus or herbs inspired the first Bombilla & Gourd(R) Mate Tea(TM) flavors, and the desire to further initiate "mate for the masses" led to the addition of fruits like peach, pomegranate and blueberry, offering a variety of flavors to please all palates.

Brewed and bottled in the United States, certified organic Bombilla & Gourd(R) Mate Tea(TM) uses only yerba mate tea leaves supplied by EcoTeas(TM), a member of the Fair Trade Federation. The pure leaves are shipped from a sustainable family farm in Northern Argentina.

About Bombilla & Gourd(R)

Bombilla & Gourd(R) Inc. was founded in summer 2006 by three long time friends and budding entrepreneurs after a trip to Argentina where they discovered the merits of mate, a popular tea consumed almost religiously in areas of South America. With the ink barely dry on their college diplomas the three -- Tommy, Noah and Ariel -- left their corporate jobs in investment banking and real estate, and without any beverage background, cleverly developed Mate Tea(TM), a USDA-organic ready-to-drink mate beverage perfect for any mate devotee or mainstream America. A year later, Mate Tea(TM) is available nationally at retailers like Whole Foods Markets. Now the trio of beverage moguls, who swear to "never compromise the integrity of any their beverages with too much sugar, preservatives or artificial ingredients" is already expanding into other organic beverages that maintain cultural heritage and authenticity while embracing the needs and palates of all consumers.
