The American Council for Food Safety and Quality (ACFSQ) Board of Directors has selected Merle Jacobs as its new President and Chief Executive Officer effective July 2, 2007. Jacobs spent 20 years working for the California Almond Board of California as a Field Representative, Product Quality Manager and most recently, as Associate Director, Industry Relations, Food Quality and Safety.

"We believe that Merle's expertise at managing food safety and quality issues from growing through processing is key to the American Council's newly initiated strategic direction," says George Sousa, Sr., Chairman of the Board and Vice Chairman of Mariani Packing Company, a global supplier of dried fruits and snacks.

"Given the myriad global challenges facing the dried fruit and nut industry, our board has targeted several key initiatives including innovative lab services, new commodity inspections and increased capacity for third party inspection certifications for sanitation and food safety," adds Sousa, who previously served as chairman of the board in 1983 to 1985 when it was called the Dried Fruit Association of California.

"We expect to unveil a dynamic marketing program to our members when we celebrate our centennial next February, 2008," says Sousa. "We will expand our portfolio of member services and grow outside services to increase revenue."

Jacobs succeeds Richard Novy who will retire after 28 years of serving the dried fruit and nut industry. Jacobs will serve as president and CEO of both the ACFSQ and the Specialty Crop Trade Council.

The ACFSQ, headquartered in Sacramento, California, offers technical consulting services in food safety, good manufacturing practices and sanitation audits, HACCP and lab analysis.
