 | | EAST, WEST MEET BETHESDA AT THE NEW YIN YANKEE | | | Yin Yankee Bethesda | | 01/05/2007 | | | 'Gastronaut' Chef Jerry Trice Tempts Diners With his Unique Take on 'Global Cuisine'
Award-winning restaurateur Kim Klopcic and celebrated chef Jerry Trice are thrilled to announce the opening of their latest endeavor, Yin Yankee Bethesda. Yin Yankee, a play on the "east meets west" nature of the innovative cuisine offered at the restaurant, has enjoyed great success and a loyal following at its original Annapolis incarnation, and is now expanding in location, size and concept. The menu highlights fresh, indigenous ingredients and bright flavors, offering Seasonal American Cuisine with Asian Influences and Sushi. Yin Yankee will morph throughout the day from quick and casual -- complete with a communal table and speedy lunchtime takeout -- to dinner in the evening and a late-night lounge scene.
With fresh and unique ingredient combinations at the forefront, Yin Yankee offers a combination of small plates and courses that allow diners to enjoy a wide variety of flavors and textures. Diners can create a tasting menu of their choice by combining several dishes, sharing and trying. A top-notch, knowledgeable staff is involved every step of the way, helping with selections and wine pairings, and guiding the experience.
Menu categories include "Liquids," highlighting soups such as Crab & Lemongrass "Chowda" with Serrano Ham, Corn and Potatoes and Spicy Brazilian Tomato Soup with Coconut Milk, Lemongrass and Thai Grilled Shrimp; "Noodly," which includes noodle dishes such as Wok Seared Vegetables & Udon Noodle in Mystifying Peanut Lime Sauce and Chilled Maine Lobster with Rice Vermicelli, Paw-Paw Mango Slaw, Grapefruit & Peanuts; "C- Food," with dishes such as Banana Leaf & Curry Roasted Whole Bronzini with Ancho Banana Jam and Sticky Rice and the signature "Crab Chop" with Seaweed Salad and Wasabi Cream. Additional categories include "Rolled," "Steamed," "Tossed," and "Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy." A full sushi bar, with both traditional selections and Yin Yankee originals, rounds out the menu.
The dining experience is complimented by a late-night lounge scene, with a resident DJ spinning tunes and occasional guest DJs from around the globe. This after-hours scene is decidedly different, with a relaxed atmosphere and a hip, late-night menu for revelers.
Before joining Yin Yankee Annapolis in 2000, Chef Trice was executive chef at some of the DC area's most well-known and beloved restaurants, including Bistro Bistro and Sam & Harry's. He received his real-life training from his grandfather, who taught him how to fish and enjoy local, indigenous ingredients, eventually trained at the Culinary Institute of America, and learned from mentors in various kitchens throughout his life. "Yin Yankee is a very personal experience for people," says Mr. Trice. "It's about the flavor, mouth-feel and beauty of the product being served, and the simple pleasure when exceptionally prepared food meets convivial hospitality in an entertaining environment."
Mr. Klopcic, whose family was selected as "America's Best Restaurant Family" in 2006, has a long history of owning and operating restaurants and theaters throughout the U.S. He has dedicated himself to providing customers with a memorable dining experience. "Yin Yankee is about experience," said Mr. Klopcic. "It is different things to different people, from sushi bar to quick lunch to special occasion dinner or a great place to unwind with a cocktail and the latest in music. The threads that tie it all together are the fresh, unique food and the unparalleled experience."
Yin Yankee designer Gregory Hill, a television and film scenic artist whose credits include all three "Law & Order" shows, "The Devil Wears Prada," and "Capote," has created another kind of performance space for Chef Trice and his staff. A vibrant, open kitchen in a modern setting with colors of earth, sky and sea serve as the theater in which Chef Trice will provide the exceptional Yin Yankee dining experience.
